Soldier's Kashmir 'rape attempt'

Police in Pakistan-administered Kashmir are investigating reports that a soldier attempted to rape a local girl.

The alleged incident took place on Monday near the town of Hattian in Jhelum district.

Kashmir remains the main cause of tension between Pakistan and India, who have fought two wars over the disputed Himalayan territory.

Both sides have deployed hundreds of thousands of troops there and civilians are often caught up in the violence.

'Cries for help'

The girl, a local college student, was returning home to her village of Kachan Syedan when she was attacked by the soldier, the police report said.

She managed to escape after locals heard her cries for help and came to her rescue.

Police told the BBC they are investigating the matter and no arrest has been made so far.

This is not the first incident of its kind involving Pakistan army troops in Kashmir.

In July 2005, three soldiers were charged with raping a woman near the town of Athmuqam in the Neelum valley.

The case was later shelved after an army investigation decided the charges were "unsubstantiated".
